We especially paid tribute to Ms. Mai Dolch for her contributions to our causes since 2007. Her generosity has changed many thousands of lives in Vietnam. Nine schools were built for 1,400 students; three health clinics were funded to serve 50,000 patients annually; safe drinking water systems were installed for 37 schools with 10,000 students; and cataract surgeries were performed on 1,000 low-income patients to name a few projects that were made possible by Ms. Dolch. Mai Dolch shared her thoughts on her philanthropy and what keeps her giving. Her speech is excerpted below. We hope her message will inspire you as well.

I am humbled to be recognized for the work we have done together in Vietnam through VNHELP. It has helped to fulfill a dream I’ve had since I was very young.

When my husband, Volker Dolch, was alive, he told me running the business was his department but charity work was mine. I took it seriously. Volker adapted to our Vietnamese culture well. He encouraged me to reach out and help others, especially the people in my country. But back then we were very busy working to grow our company and I did not have time to do charity work.

Through those years of hard work, our efforts paid off. We were able to retire in the year 2000 and began to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our boat. Sadly, soon after we arrived in Mexico he came down with an illness and we were forced to return home for his medical treatments. He struggled for almost two years and died in August 2003.

To honor him, I kept on living our dream but needed a new focus. I started to look for a good charitable organization to work with and found VNHELP. As many of you already know, VNHELP is a group of volunteers who share a common goal making better life for poor people in Vietnam.

I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Thu Do and VNHELP. I’d also like to acknowledge the endless effort of the VNHELP Board of Directors for driving the organization to continue growing. You all deserve to be recognized for your monetary and voluntary contributions to VNHELP. Our work in Vietnam can not be done as a collective of individuals. But together, as a community, we can achieve our goals.

During my last trip to Vietnam, I experienced the generosity from people who had so little, yet shared what they had with me. They taught me a lesson about giving that I will not soon forget. I hold that experience dear in my heart, and it fuels me with the passion to give back.

There is much work to be done in the years ahead for education, safe water, medical accessibility, disease control and many other projects that support the disadvantaged communities. We all want to achieve these lofty goals, but they can only become reality with your help. I am committed and I ask you to be the same. Please be generous tonight. Give as much as you can. Every dollar counts. Thank you very much.

Check out the Vietnamese translation of her speech as well!

Tôi rất vui khi VNHELP ghi nhận những thành quả mà tôi và VNHELP cùng đạt được trong các công tác từ thiện tại Việt Nam.
