Mrs. Lai has earned her living by selling lottery tickets on the streets. Each day she made roughly about $7 – just enough to get by after covering the rent of $75/month. In October 2017, while selling lottery tickets on the street, Ms. Lai was robbed and beaten by two young men. The situation has become more difficult ever since Ms. Lai was injured and remained unable to work. Currently Ms. Lai still has not recovered. Her surgical wounds have only partially healed causing much pain. Vy was born with heart disease, a hereditary condition, needing regular checkups. Recently she was diagnosed with constricted blood arteries in chest and stomach, requiring coronary angioplasty to place stents to restore blood flow through the arteries. Her family lives in poverty. Her father passed away in October 2017 at a very young age. Vy’s widowed mother is still paying the medical bills for the deceased spouse. Her income from all odd jobs of approximately 500,000 VND per week can barely cover living expenses and saving for trips to Saigon for Vy’s medical care. Vy will need another checkup in three months.
